SCL Direct To launch New Emergency Lighting Site

Steel City Lighting Direct, the industrial and commercial lighting specialists are launching a brand new micro site making waves in the emergency lighting sector, by bringing both specialist knowledge and competitive pricing to the forefront of the web.

Launched yesterday, the new micro site can be found at www.emergency-lighting-direct.co.uk and offers everything from modular lighting products to LED emergency lighting.

Managing Director of Steel City Lighting Direct, who specializes in industrial and commercial lighting products, Tony Baxter said, “We are really excited about the launch and are hoping to build upon the vast range of products on offer. We wanted to create a specialized site after the success of our other site at www.scldirect.co.uk. We got feedback showing that a specialised site for emergency lighting is something of a rarity and due to this huge gap in the market the new site was formed.”

The brand new site has been on the drawing board for some time and after this site is fully established, the team at SCL Direct hope to create other specialist lighting sites in the not so distant future.

Mr Baxter added, “There seems to be a lot of confusion surrounding emergency lighting and it seems that it has become something of a grey area, especially in terms of knowing where to go and who to ask about getting the correct emergency lighting and fire prevention advice. By speaking to the right organisations and getting a proper risk assessment, you will then be able provide the very best protection.”

Each premises requiring emergency lighting should be treated as an individual case, as should the people who it will be used to protect. This means that whether you are looking for emergency lighting for a care home, children’s home or indeed a warehouse environment, the space should be individually risk assessed and passed so that requirements are met.
The primary purpose of emergency escape lighting is to illuminate escape routes, but it also illuminates other safety equipment. The emergency escape lighting luminaries can be stand-alone, dedicated units or incorporated into normal light fittings, all of which are available in digestible chunks on the new SCL Direct website.

Mr Baxter added, “The new site is a revolutionary idea, as it will attempt to clarify regulations and provide extremely cost effective solutions. It has been in the planning stages for some time, and the team here at SCL Direct are really looking forward to developing it and tailoring it as a great resource for those in need of help.”

Steel City lighting Celebrate After Dean Ashton Football Event Is Dubbed ‘Huge Success’

Steel City Lighting is celebrating the success of their very first ‘Lighting Up My Future’ activity based event, which took place last Thursday evening at CFC Shalford in Braintree, Essex after West Ham and England ace, Dean Ashton turned on some brand new floodlights for the local team.

The SCL Direct floodlights, which were recently purchased by the football club thanks to grant assisted funding were intended to help the club’s players enjoy football safely during the winter months. Although the venue has never had specialist lighting before, it is hoped the installation of the floodlights will encourage locals to be more active and continue to play sports during the winter months.

Tony Fowell, Managing Director at Steel City Lighting said, “It’s extremely important to us to be able to give something back to local communities so we were delighted to work with CFC Shalford to help them find the best lighting solution to meet their requirements. The event was a huge success and many people turned out to meet Dean, get footballs and shirts signed and have the odd photograph taken.

Despite the snowy conditions, the team at CFC Shalford were able to train under the new lights and were delighted at the clubs new edition. The highlight of the evening came when Steel City lightings managing director, Tony Fowell, handed over some sponsorship money to club chairman, Ian Butcher who was both surprised and delighted by the donation.

Mr Fowell added, “We are so pleased that we were able to support CFC Shalford with an undisclosed sum. The event was a huge success and we are in the process of planning our very next ‘Lighting Up My Future’ event, which will hopefully kick off at the end of September. We all know how important it is to stay active so we’re happy to have played our part with outdoor lighting that will encourage members of CFC Shalford and their families to be active whatever the season and play a role in the community.”

Tipped as one of the country’s brightest young forwards, Ashton has played for England at under-19 and senior team level. Signed by West Ham in 2006 in a club record £7.25 million deal, Ashton has been on the one to watch list ever since. Despite a difficult few years plagues by injuries, the Striker has established himself as a force to be reckoned with and was a very welcome addition to last Thursdays event.

Energy Saving Hospital lights: Now That’s A Bright Idea

Hospital lighting during the medieval era left a lot to be desired, I think we would all agree that candle light and the good old fashioned scalpel do not make a great team! Thankfully for us all, Thomas Edison changed things for the better and since then hospitals along with the rest of the industry began the non-stop search for revolutionary lighting products that were either cost efficient, bright enough for intricate work or in recent times, energy saving.

Tony Baxter, Chief Executive of Steel City Lighting Direct, one of the leading providers of industrial and commercial lighting, said, “Hospital executives are faced with an extremely difficult job when selecting the right equipment for the job, nowadays there are so many lighting products on the market and selecting the right one inevitably depends on whether or not it is purpose specific.”

“Halogen lights for example, can give off a clean crisp light inside the examination room or operating theatre, for purposes such as these it is extremely important that no shadow is created, or costly mistakes could be made with the surgeon’s knife. One of the most important areas requiring purpose specific lighting is in fact the dermatologist’s examination room. A rash or skin infection may look like one thing in natural light, but in fact be something very different when placed under a lighted magnifier.”

With NHS budgets under close inspection, especially in the chancellor’s yearly budget, hospital chief executives and indeed the Government are finding ways to cut costs without compromising on their standards of care. One of the most obvious ways for many to achieve this is by joining the energy saving revolution and investing in one of the many environmentally friendly lighting products that have saturated the market in recent times.

Other public buildings have taken a stand by making attempts to reduce their carbon footprint and hospitals should indeed follow their lead. Due to increased demand new hospitals are being constructed and existing ones are being renovated from the ground up to provide better services to a much wider audience. Despite popular belief, incorporating green fixtures, lamps and controls to a ward, is not necessarily more expensive initially, but it is certainly cheaper in the long-term.

Mr Baxter, whose firm offer energy saving lighting products ideal for hospital environments added, “Modular lighting is ideal for the hospital environment and one of our most popular varieties is certainly our surface modular range. This range is extremely energy saving and comes with not only a high frequency control gear but there is also a three hour maintained version available.”

Another great range for the hospital environment is the category two recessed modular lights, as they too have huge energy saving capabilities. With their large four way loop inside the terminal block and the choice of maintained emergency versions if required, this means that they are not only hugely cost effective and safe, they will also allow your hospital to reduce its carbon footprint and give off the right impression.

Mr Baxter added, “We are all living in very forward-thinking times and protecting the environment for future generations has become very topical recently. We should all try to do out bit and conserve the energy we use and that should apply to huge buildings like healthcare centres and hospitals.”

The Green Office Credentials - Everyone’s Responsibility

Steel City Lighting, the experts in in industrial and commercial lighting, are upping the ante on greener office lighting and encouraging businesses everywhere to join them in not only a spot of cost-cutting for 2009, but in conserving energy for future generations.

Recent figures released by the Carbon Trust, show that businesses account for 40 per-cent of the UK’s annual carbon emissions, which is in turn costing businesses an estimated £2 billion. In light of the recent economic downturn, this is one expense we could all do without, so it makes sense to not only invest in the future of younger generations, but to find ways of reducing the impact this is having on businesses across the UK.

Tony Baxter, Managing Director of Steel City Lighting Direct, who are campaigning for the use of modular lighting and energy saving alternatives in the workplace, through the distribution of PR and newsletters, said, “In the past we have championed many causes at Steel City Lighting, one of which was nurturing sport in youngsters, but this is something that we are keen to promote in 2009. Conserving energy it is not only a global issue, but businesses seem unaware of how much money they could be saving, through something as simple as purchasing a new lighting product or bulb”

Findings from the Carbon Trust indicated that 67 per-cent of workers are willing to contribute towards reducing their company’s carbon footprint, but they are unsure of how to go about it requiring guidance. What’s even more disturbing, however is that just 18 per-cent of workers feel that their businesses is doing enough to contribute, possibly down to the amount of articles and resources surrounding the subject.

Mr Baxter added, “One of the best ways to cut down on your carbon footprint is to invest in some form of modular lighting. The best energy saving option we have come across is the Category 2 Recessed Modular Lights as they are both economical and of high quality. By purchasing this type of lighting product, for as little as £16.63 per unit, you could in fact cut your energy usage by up to 20 per-cent.”

The Category 2 Recessed Modular lighting, works by controlling the constant voltage controlled high frequency improving the overall performance of the lamps, extending the lamp life and creating energy savings. There are even energy-saving replacement tubes available at a very low-costing giving every business a huge incentive to reduce their carbon footprint and take back their slice of the £2 billion wasted each year through energy ignorance.

Bringing greener habits into the workplace is an essential part of tackling climate change, especially as a significant proportion of CO2 emissions come from businesses. Encouraging your workers to bring their green attitudes into the workplace maybe using a brainstorming session can be a great way to achieve environmental harmony. It is important that every business makes a conscious effort to make environmentally friendly working part of the norm instead of quick fix fad.

The Carbon Trust are able to provide any business with energy saving guides and resources on issues ranging from educating your staff on energy saving, posters to remind staff to turn the lights off and general overviews regarding where most of the energy is wasted in the business environment,. There are even resources focussing on reducing such problems such as purchasing energy saving lighting products and energy saving bulbs.

Mr Baxter added, “We invite all of our customers to call us for energy saving hints and tips and any questions that they may have with regards to purchasing energy saving lighting products. If we can cut the carbon emissions of just a few businesses, we will be extremely happy, just generating an awareness around this very important subject makes the whole project extremely worthwhile.”
